As Catalonia is working towards independence from Spain the Barcelona football team, an essential part of their identity, has decided to to side with Catalonia's fight. Team mambers have posted on various social websites, most notably twitter, about how they feel towards the situation. The
club said it "energetically asserts its right to use the Catalan language and the model of language immersion that has been in force in Catalonia over the last 34 years". Catalonia is fighting against the regulation of the education of Castilian Spanish so they can maintain their teaching of Catalan language. This coupled with the economic crisis in Spain has the people of Catalonia pushing for a vote for independence.
Seeing this as Catalonia's chance for independence is quite surprising but understandable. Where as other countires are overcome with seperation through civil war or political rebelions this one is being handled without any riots, at this moment, or real violence. This is brought about by a strong sense of regionalism and assurtion of their ideals and goals.
This has a significant impact on the culture of not only Catalonia but Spain also because the Barcelona club team, an icon of the spanish culture itself, has taken a side against the government this will influence the people. People are easily swayed by the popular culture. The regionalism influence comes from the fight to purserve their local culture by rejecting the idea of forcing only one teaching of Spanish instead of their launguage, this dispute will drastically affect the relationship between Catalonia and Spain later if they do in fact gain their independence.
